There is the Hasidic tale told about the
Rabbi who went to a special place in the forest and said a special prayer, and as a result his people were blessed. In the next generation, when times were hard, the new
Rabbi knew to go into the forest, but did not know the place, yet he did know
the prayer, and that was sufficient. And later still, in times of trouble, the newer Rabbi did not know to go to the forest, though he knew the prayer, and that was
sufficient. Until finally, it was not remembered to go to the forest, nor where
the special place was, and the prayer had been lost, but the story was told,
and that was sufficient.
I want more than just a story....
